Camden's Best-Kept Secret: Gordon Bok's Wood Carvings
Did you know that Gordon Bok, Camden's native son most well-known for his singing and songwriting, has also been a woodworker for most of his life?
His wood sculptures and bas-relief carvings celebrate the people, boats, and fisheries he grew up with along the coast of Maine - as does his music. He feels it is just another way to preserve the ideas and culture, the traditions, songs and stories of Maine's heritage and way of life.
He mostly uses mahogany, butternut and native pine, along with woods from further afield such as cypress, Alaskan cedar, siruaballi, British Colombian yew and Spanish cedar. Bok says he most often carves in silence, so it "seems to find experiences that have fallen through the cracks . . . some of these pieces represent the processing of some long-buried memories. Others are simply honoring the people I have known, and the work they took pride in . . .".
These exquisite works of art will be on display at the Camden Public Library's Picker Room through the month of March and you can join Gordon at the March Coffeehouse on Thursday, March 1 for his "Songs in the Wood" concert. The concert begins at 7:00 p.m. Seating is limited and tickets are $15, available at the library.
